Spark Plug Bug Convention

This body of my work flows from my personal love of mechanical and technological devices. In the earliest of these works, I used mechanical components such as spark plugs, distributor caps, and exhaust headers, to animate — often in a playful or humorous manner — technological themes.

I later began incorporating mechanical elements with human qualities to “recreate” numerous monsters from Greek mythology. In these pieces, the pseudo-technological creatures are slain by the usual Greek heroes who remain vulnerably human. Such monsters appear in our modern myths when we are confronted by a menacing technology which has surpassed us in strength and intelligence. The resolution of this conflict demands that we artistically engage these monsters in order to regain control of technology for the continued benefit of our society.

In later pieces, I have chosen again to separate the techno-mechanical theme from Greek mythology and to return to the creation of playful and animated mechanical creatures.
